Stranger in the Woods
Stranger in the Woods
We had a wonderful snowstorm here yesterday and it was the perfect opportunity for us to build the bird feeder, snow girl that we read about in the book, i love dirt! written by Jennifer Ward. Our favorite winter reads include, Snowballs by Lois Ehlert and Stranger in the Woods by Carl R. Sams and Jean Stoick. While reading these books, we have been discussing the fact that during the winter it can be difficult for birds to find food and started visualizing the great bird feeder, snow person we would build. When the snow started, we gathered orange slices, nuts, seeds and dried fruit and when there was just enough snow we started our creation.
When we were finished we came inside, put on our new bathrobes from Santa, sat by the fire and enjoyed some delicious hot chocolate. We made sure to build “Cutie the Snow Girl” within clear view of our family room, so that we could be on the lookout for hungry birds. Suddenly, within minutes, we spotted a bird that was happily nibbling on “Cutie”.
Our oldest daughter spontaneously jumped up to get our bird field guide and identified our visitor as a Chickadee...and all was well with the world.
