Beeswax Candles
Making, Burning & Giving Away Beeswax Candles
The giveaway is now closed. Congratulations Emily!
We have enjoyed burning beeswax candles for many years. There is a soft golden light and deliciously subtle smell that only comes from beeswax. After numerous purchases of individual candles from the local health food store, I decided to go online and find a source for buying them in bulk. I was thrilled when I discovered Big Dipper Wax Works. Their candles are made with the utmost care and the company philosophy is one that I wholeheartedly stand behind. My first shipment came with a tastefully designed insert that read, “Why Burn Beeswax?”, which solidified my commitment to using only beeswax candles in our home. Well... from that point on I have been a loyal customer and love ordering our favorite tealights and pillars in bulk. I was thrilled when Big Dipper Wax works offered to give away one of their wonderful Botanical Collection Gift Sets to a Playful Learning reader.
Now, on to the candle making part... Because lighting candles is such a big part of what we do everyday, we thought it would be fun to try to make some of our own. I was not quite ready to take on the beautiful, hand-dipped version that Renee at FIMBY created - although it is next on our list. This candle making kit from Magic Cabin seemed to be the perfect entry point into candle making for the girls and me.

Rolled Beeswax Candles
The kit contains colorful sheets of beeswax, cotton string and a pattern.
We used the pattern to cut the beeswax sheet in half. Next we aligned the string along the left had side of the wax.
The girls slowly rolled the beeswax around the string.
They used some of the beeswax sheets to cut out different shapes and designs for decorating.
They were very proud of their creations... and loved watching their candles as they illuminated our next meal.
