Counting the Days: Our First Advent Calendar
Counting the Days: Our First Advent Calendar
It started with the recent Kid’s Craft Weekly on advent calendars. From there I began to poke around a bit and became completely inspired by the wonderful handmade advent calendars that I discovered around the blogosphere. We decided to adapt one that we saw, which was made up of envelopes that contain a piece of paper describing a family activity for each night.
It turned out to be the perfect project one early morning while we were still in our PJs. It was not until we were deeply involved in making the calendar that I realized how many opportunities for learning were involved (see below). The girls wrote out the numbers and then added the corresponding number of little silver stars on the outside of each envelope. The experience ended up being a great math review.
After creating and hanging our creation, we looked at a calendar to map out the activities for the 24 nights leading up to Christmas. The girls came up with a number of them while others remain a surprise. Next, we printed and folded up the activities and inserted them into each envelope.
We are all very excited!
